Activities

Activities are an integral part of the Golden Hill experience. A full schedule of therapeutic, leisure and recreational activities helps residents to:

  • Keep the body active
  • Maintain social skills and social interaction
  • Increase mental alertness
  • Maintain optimum psychosocial well-being

A wide variety of activities, in both formal and informal settings, keeps residents functioning at the highest level in the physical, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of life. These activities can help restore and maintain a resident's self-esteem, confidence, and a strengthened sense of belonging and purpose.

Music Therapy

In recognition of the incomparable benefits of music therapy, Golden Hill staffs two full-time board certified music therapists. The therapists provide residents with therapeutic music sessions which include large and small group sessions, one-on-one sessions, and palliative care. Large group sessions include rhythm circle (drums), dance and music appreciation groups. Therapeutic ensembles include bell choir, harmonica group, and singing groups. As music holds meaning and memories throughout our lives, one therapist focuses full-time on our Dementia Care Unit. The music provides a calm, yet stimulating environment, promoting socialization and reminiscing, as well as behavior management. The music provides structure and familiarity which helps our residents to function to the best of their abilities.

Golden Hill has an ongoing Music Therapy Internship Program with Slippery Rock University. With inquiries regarding this opportunity, please contact Golden Hill ext. 425.

Meeting the Needs of Residents

Our program is specially designed to meet the needs, abilities and interests of each resident. Residents are encouraged to participate in daily activities as well as to assist in the planning of activities.

Following are just a few examples of activities available at Golden Hill. Because our activity programs are tailored to residents, calendars will vary according to the residents' preferences.

Physical Fitness

Offered daily, these activities help residents maintain and improve mobility and physical wellness through enjoyable activities specifically designed to meet their needs. Golden Hill's physical activities include: walking, stretching, chair exercising and balloon volleyball.

Fine Arts Activities

Fine Arts Activities are designed to give residents an opportunity to exercise their artistic creativity and individuality through a variety of venues including painting, drawing. sculpting, crafts, and collages.

Cognitive/Intellectual

Many residents enjoy learning, discussing their thoughts and opinions, playing games, and solving puzzles. These activities provide an excellent forum to support mental awareness and cognition.

Nature/Outdoor

In Golden Hill's secure courtyard, residents can garden, bird watch, or picnic. Breathing fresh air, feeling a warm breeze, and enjoying the beauty of nature contribute toward a positive outlook and a healthy spirit.

Reminiscing

Each resident has his or her own rich and interesting life experiences and memories. Activities such as sharing photos, memory-filled discussions and afternoon socials encourage them to explore a sense of self and life review through socialization.

Sensory Enjoyment

Senses help to trigger pleasant and meaningful memories. Activities like sharing photos, memory-filled discussions, and afternoon socials invigorate these senses and provide residents with a feeling of relaxation and comfort.

Intergenerational

For many of our residents, there is nothing more pleasurable than hearing the laughter of a child. Golden Hill's doors are always open to individuals and/or groups who share our love and concern for our residents. Choirs, musical groups, and children are welcome to share time with our residents and staff to create an enjoyable intergenerational experience.

Life Skills

Many residents prefer to participate in activities in which they can contribute their long-time talents and abilities. Life Skill activities are tailored to each resident, offering them the opportunity to do just that. These activities play an important role in our new culture. Residents with unique talents like to share them with others. One resident brought her pasta machine to make gnocchi. Another holds art classes twice a month.

Seasonal/Theme

Most enjoy celebrating the season or learning about various cultures. Golden Hill residents are encouraged to contribute their ideas and talents in the planning and decorating for events and celebrations such as holiday parties, cookouts, dances and theme socials.

Family Get-togethers

Families and friends of residents are welcome and invited to Golden Hill at any time!
